TRAIL membership sign-up now open!

This is the news many of you have been waiting for: TRAIL of Johnson County -- the new nonprofit whose mission is to help older adults age more safely and comfortably in their own homes by providing Tools and Resources for Active Independent Living -- is now accepting members!

Based on the nationwide Village to Village model of aging-in-place organizations, TRAIL offers its members access to three important benefits and services:

  • Volunteer assistance for in-home tasks such as light chores and errands, daily check-in services, and transportation to appointments
  • A list of local prescreened service providers, such as plumbers or home health aides, for tasks that are beyond the scope of our volunteers
  • Social and educational activities, such as group meals, presentations, or visits to local cultural attractions

Two types of TRAIL memberships are available. Full Membership includes all three of the services noted above, including assistance from TRAIL volunteers. Affiliate Membership, which is often the choice for individuals or households not yet ready for in-home help, includes access to the prescreened service providers and social and educational offerings.

Joining TRAIL is easy! Just visit the Membership section of our website to learn more about benefits and fees, and then follow the prompts to sign up online. The website also includes membership forms that you may download and return to us via mail. Or, if you prefer, just give me a call at the TRAIL office, 319-800-9003 or email me directly at and I will be happy to answer any questions and walk you through the sign-up process. You may also stop by our office in Room 201 of the Iowa City-Johnson County Senior Center at 28 South Linn Street in downtown Iowa City. Our office hours are generally 9AM-1PM, M-F, but it's best to call first to make sure we'll be on hand to assist you.

In addition, we are continuing to recruit and train TRAIL volunteers, and we welcome local service providers to augment our list. Let us know if you're interested in getting involved in TRAIL as a volunteer or vendor.

Thanks very much for your interest in TRAIL. We look forward to serving you and contributing to Johnson County's growing reputation as one of the top retirement destinations in the nation.
